Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
