Marco Rubio confirmed this Friday that all trade negotiations with Canada had been suspended after Canada's government reposted on social media a 5-minute excerpt of a 1987 speech by Ronald Reagan denouncing tariffs that seemed to trigger President Trump's anger.

The premier of Ontario, Premier Ford, whose government aired the Reagan commercial in American markets recently, wrote on social media that the both countries are "stronger together", while Trump posted his own string of online messages promoting the supposed benefits of import taxes.
"Our neighbor and the United States are friends, partners and allies. President Reagan understood that we are better united," Ford wrote with the Reagan clip. "God bless our nation and God bless the United States of America."
Primary Cause of the Conflict
The breakdown in relations reportedly stems from a one-minute TV commercial including President Reagan's radio address stating that "trade barriers hurt every American worker"
Trump reacted on his social platform without proof that Canadian officials had in some way run a "deceptive" and "false" commercial, and announced that "every trade discussion with our northern neighbor are officially terminated"

Rubio, the secretary of state, on the weekend told reporters that the Ontario premier had aired commercials in the United States which "took Reagan's words incorrectly," adding that the Reagan Foundation had criticized the campaign, too
The Reagan Foundation stated Thursday that the Ontario government's commercial "misrepresents" the President's address, without explaining in what way
Ford's office answered by reposting the extended, five-minute excerpt, and claimed that the advertisement uses "an unedited excerpt from one of Reagan's speeches, which is available through public domain"

"This is the ad that drove Trump to terminate all trade talks with our neighbor," the committee posted on social media

Chris Sands, the head of the Canadian research center at Johns Hopkins School, suggested the failure in negotiations simply formalizes a unproductive situation
"Can we stop negotiations? Yes, you can stop discussions about metals, aluminum, energy, all of it," he said
The analyst pointed out the irony of Trump citing Reagan while reversing his trade legacy
"The former president supported the nation – he believed in open markets. Perhaps President Trump thinks that, but it's not his current position now"
