Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
