Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a document approving the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
