RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
