A Group of Six British Citizens Jailed for One Million Pound Fire Attack on Storage Facility Holding Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid

Six Britons acting for Russia’s Wagner group have been handed jail terms for igniting a located in London warehouse that was storing relief supplies destined for Ukraine.

Court Rulings and Involvement

Sentencing the men, the judge at the central criminal court remarked that they had orchestrated a “series of terrorist and sabotage acts” to benefit the Russian government.

Dylan Earl was given a 17-year jail term with an extra six-year period on supervised release due to his “leading role”. Another defendant, Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was sentenced to 12 years in jail with an additional year on extended licence. The offences they admitted resulted in them being the first individuals to be found guilty under the National Security Act 2023.

Jakeem Rose, aged 23, also a Croydon resident, was sentenced to a term of eight years and ten months. Nii Mensah, 23, from Thornton Heath, south London, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment and Ugnius Asmena, who was without a fixed address, was given seven years. These three individuals were each found guilty of serious fire-setting and received a further year on supervised release by the court.

Ashton Evans drug dealer hailing from Newport, Gwent, was jailed for nine years imprisonment with an extra year on supervised release after being convicted of withholding information about acts of terrorism connected to a separate scheme in Mayfair.

Incident Specifics

The arson attack on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London put 60 firefighters at risk and caused one million pounds worth of destruction in March last year.

The proceedings revealed that Earl, 21 and the 24-year-old Reeves remained in their residences while organising the attack for the Wagner group, acting on behalf of the Russian Federation.

The individuals involved selected the warehouse because it was being utilized for providing humanitarian aid and satellite communication gear to Ukraine.

When the same Ukrainian company was hit by an arson attack 10 days later in Madrid, detectives from the Met’s counter-terrorism command took over the probe.

Proof and Additional Schemes

When Earl was taken into custody, police analysis of his cellphone revealed he had recordings of the storage facility blaze being started and was in contact with the Wagner organization on the Telegram messaging app, via an account with the handles ‘Privet Bot account’ and ‘Lucky Strike alias’.

Some of the messages indicated that reconnaissance for additional operations, involving arson attacks at a dining establishment and wine shop in Mayfair owned by the Russian dissident Evgeny Chichvarkin had already been carried out. The employment of explosive devices to damage buildings was also deliberated.

Investigators found that the defendant Earl was also raising the possibility of kidnapping the dissident Chichvarkin and “exiling him back to Russia to confront imprisonment”.

The individual involved in narcotics from Elmesthorpe, Leicestershire had discussed an additional planned incident in the Czech nation.

In a residence inspection, law enforcement found a flag of Russia, more than £20,000 in cash and cocaine hydrochloride with a street value of about £34,000.

Driving Factors and Court Comments

The proceedings revealed he was a member of numerous pro-Russian propaganda channels and was driven by “simple and ugly greed”.

“This legal matter concerns the efforts of the Russian Federation to acquire harmful worldwide sway using social media to enlist saboteurs far from the Russian capital.”

She determined the fire incident had a “terrorist connection” regardless of whether the perpetrators knew it. The Wagner group is banned by the UK government as a terrorist group.
